MEDIA RELEASE: MOLIÈRE FOR THE FIRST TIME ON THÉÂTRE LA SEIZIÈME’S MAINSTAGE!

Vancouver, March 3, 2010. For immediate release. For the first time on the company’s mainstage, Théâtre la Seizième tackles work by the most famous French theatre artist of all times as part of its 35th anniversary season’s programming. Théâtre la Seizième presents LES MÉDECINS DE MOLIÈRE, a hilarious and caustic evening of theatre with comic characters, disguises and slapstick action from some of Molière’s famous farces revisited.

In French at Studio 16, April 14 to 17. Presented with the support of the Consulate General of France in Vancouver.

Les Médecins de Molière (Molière’s Doctors) combines two farces by legendary 17th century French playwright Molière. Le Médecin volant (The Flying Doctor,1645) and Le Médecin malgré lui (A Doctor in Spite of Himself,1666). Scenes from Le Mariage forcé (the forced marriage) and La Jalousie du Barbouillé will be finely woven into the script to create an exquisite and wonderfully entertaining performance, NOT TO BE MISSED!

Amidst today’s media and medical frenzy about H1N1, the most famous French writer of all times, 17th Century Molière, gives an unparalleled point of view on medicine, love and society! Here Molière discusses feigned illness and disguised, impostor doctors: he ridicules their supposed pompous behaviour, misuse and overuse of Latin, incompetence, ignorance, and selfishness. But mostly, all these works are sharp satires of social games presenting and pointing to eternal social types: snobs, poseurs, hypocrites, religious fanatics, etc.

Allowing for buffoonery to be performed on stage, Molière’s comedies have a freshness, a spontaneity and a universal ring that still engage audiences today. A fine exploiter of comic types, Moliere’s characterisation is quirky and original and the play has much to say about the modern world, and can be interpreted as a commentary on the challenges of today’s health care system for example.

Molière (1622- 1673) left behind a body of work which not only changed the face of French classical comedy, but has gone on to influence the work of other dramatists the world over. Directed by award-winning theatre artist Jean-Stéphane Roy, known for his talent in tackling classical works, Les Médecins de Molière is a witty, perceptive yet modern version of Molière’s compelling socio-cultural satires.
