How many times must we go down the same path until we meet someone else? This is one of the questions at the core of Après moi, by Christian Bégin, a black comedy presented by Théâtre la Seizième, from April 8th to the 12th at Studio 16. Tickets ($24-27) are available by telephone – 604.736.2616 or online at Brown paper Tickets.
In a motel off route 117, three rooms are in use. In the first, a man and woman will commit adultery for the first time. In the second, a couple will make love for the last time. In the third, a lonely man wants to die. In each room, a singular, extraordinary event will occur. And when one door opens…will it make any difference to anyone’s destiny?
Après moi is six versions of the same story, six ways of experiencing the same moment with increasing intimacy. It’s also a chance to see five of Quebec’s favourite actors deliver performances laced with sincerity and absolute precision. An examination of loneliness, this play explores our ever more distant connections to others, emphasizing the transformational power of human relationships, all with a strong dose of black humour.
With this chronicle of social foibles, Les Éternels pigistes are making their second appearance in Vancouver. This collective, made up of five actors, also performed Le rire de la mer by Pierre Michel Tremblay at Théâtre la Seizième in 2004. Since 1996, Les Éternels pigistes have come together around projects that inflame the passions of their members.
