Sasha Samar, born in the Ukraine in 1969, commits to becoming a celebrity at age 7. It’s how he hopes to be found by his mother, from whom he was separated at birth. Between his father’s intransigence, his girlfriend’s depression and his actor friend who makes a fortune imitating Lenin, Sasha pursues his dream in a crumbling USSR. He’ll experience the arrival of television, Nadia Comaneci’s rise to fame, the Summit Series, but also Chernobyl and the gradual unraveling of his country.
Inspired by a true story from Sasha Samar’s own life, Moi, dans les ruines rouges du siècle retraces the incredible journey of a man in search of himself as the world falls to pieces around him. As History marches alongside a single man’s destiny, a deeply touching narrative emerges about the lies we tell to preserve that which we hold dear. Lies that keep up appearances, but at what price?
