The Commodore Ballroom hosted the 32nd annual Jessie Richardson Theatre Awards last night, celebrating the best of Vancouver theatre. The room was warm and welcoming as four Seizième artists walked away with hardward for their work on Extra-Céleste.
Actors Dominic Duchesne and Lauren Jackson shared a Jessie in the Outstanding Performance category. Lauren, a recent Studio 58 graduate, accepted the prize on behalf of the two artists, declaring with great emotion that she felt honoured to have had the chance to travel throughout British Columbia and Alberta with a show that deals with autism, a subject of particular importance to her. As for Anita Rochon, her marvelous direction was recognized in the Outstanding Artistic Creation category. Finally, let’s not forget Drew Facey, Extra-Céleste’s Costume and Set Designer, who was also recognized in the Outstanding Artistic Creation category for his overall work in the theatre for young audiences genre.
A product of Théâtre la Seizième’s Dramaturgical Development Program, Extra-Céleste, written by Dave Deveau and translated by Lyne Barnabé, toured for two months in roughly 60 primary schools in British Columbia and Alberta, and was performed for almost 14 000 students.
Since 2000, Théâtre la Seizième and its artists have received 24 awards and 47 nominations at the Jessie Richardson Theatre Awards, which highlight the exceptional work, character, and strength of the Vancouver theatre scene.
