Nominated for eight prizes, Théâtre la Seizième and its artists won three Jessie Richardson awards during the the awards ceremony at the Commodore Ballroom.
Gilles Poulin-Denis, the author in residence at Théâtre la Seizième, received the Sydney Risk prize for his play Statu Quo. This award recognizes the creation of an exceptional new script by an emerging artist. Produced as part of Théâtre la Seizième’s Dramaturgical Development Program, Statu Quo was performed in British-Columbia and Saskatchewan in 2013. The play will also be performed on tour in Ottawa, Laval, Winnipeg and Whitehorse in 2014.
Recognized for her touching portrayal of Suzanne in Porc-épic, France Perras took the Jessie Richardson Award for the best actress in a supporting role. The actress accepted the award with much emotion, warmly thanking her peers, Théâtre la Seizième and the Vancouver theatre community.
And last but not least, Craig Holzschuh received an award for his direction of Porc-épic by David Paquet. Co-produced with Edmonton’s L’UniThéâtre, the play was seen by more than 600 people last October. In accepting the prize, Craig thanked all the artists who contributed to the production for their generosity and their commitment to the company.
Let’s remember that the actress Marie-Claire Marcotte and the designers Corwin Ferguson and Julie Martens were also nominated for Statu Quo, as well as Craig Holzschuh for his direction. And Joey Lespérance, was nominated for his portrayal of Sylvain in Porc-épic. And Théâtre la Seizième was itself nominated for this same play in the category of “Best production – small theatre”.
Since 2000, Théâtre la Seizième has received 21 “Jessies” and more than 40 nominations. The Jessie Richardson Awards were founded in 1982, to annually recognize the work of the best of Greater Vancouver’s theatre artists.
