Théâtre la Seizième is very happy to unveil its 2012-2013 season. For the first time, the only French language, professional theatre company in BC will present all of its Studio 16 mainstage season productions with English surtitles.
This decision has been inspired by a growing numbers of Francophiles and Anglophones spectators, asking repeatedly for more productions with surtitles. “Some of them attend our shows with surtitles to improve their French, but most are there because they appreciate the quality of the work and its unique French flavour”, explain Craig Holzschuh, Artistic and Managing Director at Théâtre la Seizième.
Each season, Théâtre la Seizième present two local productions and brings in Vancouver some of the finest French plays produced in Canada, including productions from Montreal, Quebec, Toronto, and Ottawa. “Our surtitled performances are a great opportunity for Vancouver’s theatre-lovers to get a glimpse of what is done – and well done – outside our city walls”, add Craig Holzschuh.
Danielle Arcand, board director of the company, hopes that the surtitles will contribute to build bridges between the Francophone and the Anglophone communities: “We hosted two focus groups this spring where the participants – Francophones, Francophiles and Anglophones – were looking for more possibility to interact with each other. We like to think that a night at our theatre can be the perfect place for this to happen.”
The 2012-2013 mainstage season highlights four nationally acclaimed plays. The season will start in October with Governor General’s literary award-winning play Porc-épic by David Paquet, a coproduction between Théâtre la Seizième and L’UniThéâtre (Edmonton). The company will then present, in collaboration with SFU Woodward’s, Robert Lepage’s La face cachée de la lune (The Far side of the Moon) at the Goldcorp Centre for the Arts. After the holidays, Yellow Moon by Scottish playwright David Greig will open at Studio 16. The season will end with Écume by Ottawa based artist Anne-Marie White in April.
As part of its young audiences season, Théâtre la Seizème will produce Statu Quo, a play for teenagers by Gilles Poulin-Denis, a Governer General literary award nominee (2010) from Vancouver, and Les 7 peurs d’Émilie, a young audiences play written by well-known artist Brian Dooley, in collaboration with Isabelle Rousseau.
