From October 16th to the 27th, Théâtre la Seizième invites you to the fantastic world of Porc-épic (Porcupine), a play full of surprises by Quebecois playwright David Paquet. Put on your nicest clothes and prepare your heart for a one of a kind tragicomic birthday party at Studio 16, presented with English surtitles on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.
It’s Cassandre’s birthday. There should be a party, but there isn’t. So she decides to invent ways to surprise herself. There’s the love affair between Théodore and Noémie. It should be an idyll, but it isn’t. So they decide to try to have a baby. It’s also the day Sylvain goes to therapy. Things should be getting better, but they’re not. So he dreams about a better life. Put these depressed people in a room together. It should be sad, but it isn’t. It’s actually funny funny funny!
Winner of the Governor General’s Award as well as the Prix Michel-Tremblay, Porc-épic is a festive tragedy where people of different stripes collide and learn to accompany one another on the road to loneliness, possibility and vulnerability. With a charming blend of absurdism, black humor and refreshing fantasy, the play highlights with a genuine originality the difficulty in being close to others without being hurt. Is it possible to touch someone without getting pricked?
Coproduced by Théâtre la Seizième and L’UniThéâtre (Edmonton), the show brings together many of the artists who collaborated on Lentement la beauté in 2009 (three Jessie Richardson Awards nominations). Among them are director Craig Holzschuh, actors Steve Jodoin, Joey Lespérance and France Perras, as well as designers Guido Tondino (stage design) and Victoria Zimski (lighting design). Actress Anna-Maria LeMaistre and Alicia Novak perform for la Seizième for the first time, while Drew Facey (costumes) and Jason Kodie (music) complete the creative team. Susan Miyagishima joins the group as Stage Manager.
