Théâtre la Seizième presents Yellow Moon, a Théâtre de la Manufacture production, at Studio 16 from January 23th to 26th, 2013. A cross between Bonnie and Clyde and Romeo and Juliet, this suspenseful rite of passage, drawn from the Scottish repertory, “keeps you glued to your seat for the entire 90 minutes” (The Gazette, Montreal). The show is presented with English surtitles on both Thursday and Saturday.
Two teenagers lost in a long-forgotten Scottish village cross paths at the corner stone. Lee is a rebellious young man well known by social services. Leila is a young woman from a good family walled in by silence. They couldn’t be more different. And yet, when something goes wrong, together they flee to the mountains of the north. There they hope to find Lee’s father, who disappeared years earlier. But at their final destination, they find themselves alone, faced with each other and their future together.
With Yellow Moon, the playwright broaches the question of identity using raw, poetic and epic storytelling. How do we define ourselves in a world we can’t even recognize? And how can we know who we are when we don’t even know where we come from? In the harsh, inhospitable forest where they hide, Leila and Lee will find the answers to these questions and discover love in the process, with its attendant thrills and mysteries.
David Greig was inspired by the adventures of “Stagger Lee”, a tale of murder anchored in American folklore, to write Yellow Moon. The play, while eminently modern, takes on legendary proportions. It drags us into a world larger than Nature itself, where strangers are familiar, poetry humanizes absent fathers, and romanticism saves us from distress. The story, told using four voices, delivered by an exceptional cast, is an ode to those who speak out, remember and relive.
Known for rigorously guiding his actors, Sylvain Bélanger directs this play reuniting Denis Bernard, Sylvie De Morais, Benoît Drouin-Germain and Monique Spaziani. They are surrounded by a team of talented designers: Marie-Hélène Dufort (Assistant Director), Pierre-Étienne Locas (Set), Marc Senécal (Costumes), Martin Labrecque (Lights) and Yves Morin (Music).
